Diwali is almost here, and Delhi is already glowing. The lanes of Old Delhi are strung with lights, potters are working overtime to meet the demand for diyas, and markets across the capital are packed with everything from Dhanteras utensils to festive wear. Whether you are hunting for lights, puja essentials, flowers, sweets or gifts for the family, there is a market in the city for it.
So, make a list, carry some cash and comfortable footwear, and read on for a Delhi-wide guide to where to go and what to pick up at each place.
Uttam Nagar Potters’ Colony
Located in West Delhi, a short auto ride from Uttam Nagar East and Uttam Nagar West metro stations, this is the city’s most atmospheric stop for diyas. Families of kumhars have been shaping clay here for generations, and in the weeks before Diwali the colony is stacked with kilns and freshly baked pottery.
Pick up clay diyas in every size, painted and decorated diyas, Lakshmi-Ganesh clay idols, kulhads, terracotta lamps and planters and miniature clay houses (gharaunda)for kids. Buying straight from the maker also keeps prices wonderfully low. Go in the morning for the best choice.
Bhagirath Place
Opposite Chandni Chowk, near the Red Fort and a short walk from Chandni Chowk metro station, Bhagirath Place is one of Asia’s biggest wholesale markets for electrical goods. If your home needs lighting for Diwali, this is the place.
Look out for LED string lights, fairy lights, rice lights and curtain lights, jhalars, lanterns, chandeliers and ceiling lights, colourful bulbs, extension boards and wires. Bargain hard, compare a few shops, and always test the lights before you pay.
Sadar Bazar
Tucked away in the north-western part of Old Delhi, and reachable from Tis Hazari and Pul Bangash metro stations, Sadar Bazar is a wholesale hub and the go-to destination for Dhanteras utensil shopping, when buying something new for the kitchen is considered auspicious.
The utensil lanes are lined with steel, brass, copper and bronze utensils, cookware, dinner sets and tableware, puja thalis and kalash, and copper bottles and glasses. The market also sells crockery, kitchenware, home decor items, artificial flowers, torans and rangoli colours, all at wholesale rates.
Chandni Chowk
In the heart of Old Delhi, stretching from the Red Fort to Fatehpuri Masjid, Chandni Chowk is the one market where you can tick off a dozen things in a single visit. The nearest station is Chandni Chowk on the Yellow Line.

Kinari Bazar is the place for gota, lace, ribbons, torans, bandanwars and festive trimmings, while Katra Neel has sarees, dupattas, lehengas and fabric. Finish with jalebisand parathas on the way out.

Fill your bags with almonds, cashews, pistachios, walnuts, figs and raisins, makhana, saffron, dried fruit boxes and puja essentials like cardamom, cloves and supari. Buy loose and ask the shop to pack it into gift boxes. Karachi halwa from the Fatehpuri sweet shops nearby makes a lovely add-on.
